What is Puppy Strangles?
Juvenile Cellulitis, also known as Puppy Strangles is a skin disorder commonly found in puppies and rarely in adult dogs.  This disorder typically happens to puppies around the ages of 3 weeks and 4 months!  Once the illness occurs; symptoms are known to be shown at the face, outer part of the ears with crusted lesions and affect the salivary lymph nodes. Although this condition’s cause is still unknown; the most common breeds to get this disorder are the following:  Golden Retrievers, Dachshunds, Gordon Setters, and more.

Juvenile Cellulitis Symptoms
  • Swollen face especially around the eyelids, lips, and muzzle
  • Lymphadenopathy (Salivary Gland) disease that affects multiple lymph nodes
  • Crusted lesions commonly found on face, ears, and eyelids
  • Lethargy
  • Fever, loss of appetite, and joint pain

How to treat Puppy Strangles?
Most cases of juvenile cellulitis can be healed within some time.  However, if the pet has gone too long without treatment; the outlook could be poor.  We recommend for all who show any symptoms of Juvenile Cellulitis to seek veterinary care.  An examination and prescribed proper medications to help better the animal’s life.  Once examined there are some tips to improve your puppy’s conditions.
While we may be giving you some tips on how to help ease the pain and discomfort of this skin disorder; we are NOT saying this is a cure for juvenile cellulitis!
  • Apply a hot pack to your pet’s sore face 2 to 3 times daily
  • Press a wet warm washcloth against your dog’s swollen throat.  5 minutes on/off, repeat until the cloth is cooled
For best care of all, Come to us where we serve to please you and your pets with our Fear Free veterinary compassion

Juvenile cellulitis, often known as puppy strangles, is a nodular and pustular skin condition that affects pups. It seldom affects adult dogs and often appears in puppies between the ages of three weeks and four months. The most typical places to be affected are the face, pinnae (the outside portion of the ear), and salivary lymph nodes. The source of this syndrome is unknown, however some breeds, such as golden retrievers, dachshunds, and Gordon setters, have been demonstrated to be prone to it.
